Answers To Some Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Midwife and Doula

A midwife or ob will take care of the medical aspect of your pregnancy and birth. They will perform medical wellness checks and are authorized to give medical care throughout pregnancy, birth and immediate postpartum. Doulas provide educational evidence based information, advice and both emotional and physical support during and after childbirth. Every birther and postpartum person should choose their doula carefully because who you welcome on your team can share your experience.

Do I need a doula if I am planning an epidural?

Doulas have such an important role whether you decide to have an epidural or not. Usually you will labour sometime before the epidural is given so a doula can help physically and mentally. After you have received the epidural a doula will continue to provide support and assistance in ensuring optimum positioning is happening, we will continue to give words of affirmation, keep the setting how you wish and provide support to your partner!

How will hiring you affect my partner’s role during the birth?

A birth doula is hired to support the birth. As a doula I have supported both births with no other support person and births with incredible partners. I work very hard to support the partner as well. This includes gentle suggestions for them, reassuring them they are doing well and that you are safe, giving them time for breaks to get snacks or stretch their legs and being a face of comfort for them as well! A doula never replaces a birth partner we only enhance their role
